Implants
A Dental implant is a procedure that replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth that look and function exactly like real ones, anchored into a patient’s jawbone with titanium metal posts rather than the tooth’s natural roots. With proper care, dental implants offer a permanent solution to tooth loss.
There are three major steps in the implant process. First, a titanium metal post is placed in the jawbone. The jawbone grows around the post and integrates with the surface of the post in a process called osseointegration. This process generally takes 12 weeks and eventually the post becomes the “root” that anchors the new teeth. Next, an abutment (metal connector) will be screwed into the post and a crown (artificial tooth) will be attached to the abutment.

Major Benefits of Implants:
- Permanent solution to tooth loss (with proper care, can last a lifetime).
- Seamlessly match the tone and shine of natural teeth.
- Cavity resistant.
- High success rate (five-year success rate for lower jaw is around 95% ).
- More durable and functionally effective than other restorative counterparts (bridges, denture).
- Implant can provide cavity-resistant and stable foundation for restorations such as dental bridge or dental crown. Teeth which support the bridgework may decay, but titanium can’t decay.
- You can brush and floss the crowns attached to the implants just like a natural tooth.

Who is a good candidate for implants? Anyone who…
- has one or more teeth missing
- is not good candidates for denture or bridgework due to a lack of natural teeth roots for anchor
- is post-adolescence (bone growth is complete)
- has adequate bone structure (density and quantity) to secure the implants or is able to have a bone graft
- has healthy oral tissues
- does NOT have health conditions that will inhibit bone healing (active diabetes, cancer or periodontal disease may need additional treatment before implant can be placed)
- does NOT smoke
How to care for your implants
Poor oral hygiene can lead to peri-implantitis around the placement site, similar to the development of periodontitis (severe gum disease). Brush at least twice a day (brush along the gums and the biting surface of the tooth), floss between teeth, and routine check up with your dentist to check on the bone level surrounding the implant as well as the gum tissue near the abutment.
